So You want to be an entrepreneur

I want to share my entrepreneurs story with you, I think its about time
to share how a dyslexic dreamer from a small nowhere town made it as
a film director and owner of a string of successful businesses , and
how I think the skills I have picked up, should be taught in every
school, college and workplace in the country – My names Mark Ashmore
and I am 35 years old and I own Future Artists LTD.

Mark Ashmore

The journey has been very hard, and in the early years, because the idea
of Future Artists (my business) was so radical, and because of the
global recession, to make this business work, no banks would lend me
any money, I have had to sleep rough, live off friends sofa’s and at
times when their was no money in the bank and bailiffs at the door,
things have got tough and many times I wanted to quit, this led to
dealing with anxiety and depression, life can get hard sometimes, we
are not super human after all – no matter what the latest cinema
films tell us.

But if you have the confidence, you can perform super feats!, that tiny
little switch of your mindset, you can get through all of the
obstacles that life throws at you, come out the other side and
achieve your goals – might be easy me saying that now, but its as
simple as that, trust me, I’ve been though it many times, just
believing you can do this, you can be the change in this world, in
the moment – its inside you… anyway’s..

So you want to run your own business, thinking of becoming a start up,
you have this great idea and are about to go on the entrepreneurs
journey – well let me tell you my story and hopefully save you some
time – things can get a little crazy, but its worth it in the end.

My name is Mark Ashmore and for the past 7 years I have been the CEO of
Future Artists, a diverse and versatile business, located in
Manchester, in the North of England. Http://www.futureartists.co.uk

Future Artists makes films, we run large scale city wide events, and we also
run a variety of food and retail businesses. Future Artists also
founded the free community workspace project called ‘Home Of Honest
Coffee’ which gives its profits away each year to the local
community.

In 2016 this year, the group of companies is on course to turn over a
quarter of a million pounds, and next year on course to hit a
million! – and I can tell you, when we started out in a freezing
Salford Warehouse, things were very different, we couldn’t even
afford the Wi-Fi!, more of which I will tell you about later, and is
behind the reasons for this post.

Through think and thin, all the up’s and downs, and let me re-assure the
reader here, that the up’s and down’s happen everyday if you are
running your own business, in the good times and the bad.

Because of this 7 years of experience I wanted to share my experiences with
you, so that you can benefit from this, and you can go on your
journey.

But first, a little about our history,

I founded Future Artists in 2009 in the middle of the worst financial
crisis in living memory, and in seven short years, we have produced a
feature film that was released theatrically in the UK and the USA –
The Lost Generation,

We also produced a 6 part award winning web series,
which was the first time the web platform Dailymotion and Screen
Yorkshire had ever commissioned a web-series before, this project was
called Portal and released in 2015, going on to be viewed by over
half a million people world-wide (with season 2 in-development).

We also turned a Salford pub into an arts venue that nearly bankrupted
me and Future Artists and learnt from this and then, we worked with
our creative community to raise the seed money, via Kickstarter to
create ‘Home of Honest Coffee’, which has gone a lot better!

Home of Honest Coffee is a free to use city centre workspace, with
super-fast Wi-Fi, meeting points and free power, so that start ups
and freelancers could have a place to work and explore, without the
risk of high city centre rent, or workspace membership or pay by the
minute cafes.

Our slogan is simple ‘why pay to work in the city’

Home of Honest Coffee was launched in 2015 and is now a year old, and one
of the reasons that I wanted to share my story with you, is that the
knowledge learnt here at Honest Coffee has set me up to grow my
business to the next level, and so to be able to share at this point
of time, seemed the right thing to do.

Honest Coffee is part social enterprise, part food and drink business –
and I took the skills I had, and all the experiences and life choices
and applied them to this new problem, I had never run a coffee shop,
and over the course of the year, with only £5000 seed money, raised
from Kickstarter and 150 backers and working alongside my amazing
team, we have grown this business to the point that we will be able
to put a free workspace in every city in the UK and have a central
point for the Future Artists network to meet and share ideas… and
turn over 1 million pounds in sales….

it’s not all plain sailing –

and as I said before, and I want to say again

The journey has been very hard, and in the early years, because the idea
of Future Artists was so radical and because of the global recession,
to make this business work, no banks would lend me any money, I have
had to sleep rough, live off friends sofa’s and at times when their
was no money in the bank and bailiffs at the door, think this is too
much and I wanted to quit, this led to dealing with anxiety and
depression, life can get hard sometimes,,, but if you have the
confidence, that tiny little switch of your mindset, you can get
through all of that, come out the other side and achieve your goals –
might be easy me saying that now, but its as simple as, just
believing you can do this, you can be the change in this world, in
the moment.

But you can’t quit if you are an entrepreneur, you know that you can’t
handle that feeling of working for someone else, because inside you,
your real self is screaming to be unleashed and show the world what
you can do… and so thats what this post is all about, I want to
teach you.

all you need is the focus, and understand how to create unlimited drive
in yourself, how the hell do you pick yourself up, when everyone is
looking at you for the answers!

and so I want to help you unlock this, and I want to offer my services
over a couple of days for 15 people that want to take that scary
step, into the world of being your own boss and have the
responsibility of having staff, big bills at the end of each month,
but in the process of running their business and their lives have
unlocked their potential and are living their dream.

For 15 people I will run a special one day seminar that will help you
unlock your potential and flesh out your business idea and get it
ready for launch, and I will also take time after the course to
follow up and advise you on the launch itself and give advice to you
on the journey.

The one day course will run over a day, and we will cover a range of
topics through group work, workshops and presentations by myself and
guests on the following.

you in class.
