Future Artists February Round-Up

by Jenny

February is always a great month for film. Oscars, BAFTA hangovers, Goyas, numerous festivals, SXSW prep and a whole lotta releases from winter projects by indie filmmakers who’ve been working right through the winter to get their movies and stories released, like this stop motion film (click!): 36801345

…Which we’re a little bit obsessed with at the moment.

And as ever it’s been just as busy – and as surprising – for Future Artists too.

February 2012’s Day of St.Valentine saw Head Chef Becky create the most beautiful dishes for a ‘Pay What You Think’ – and it went down extremely well!

All the funds are going towards increasing access to the old Victorian pub for Future Artists with Disabilities.

To name just a few events, February saw the screening of Bombay Beach, a beautiful and stark film soundtracked by Bob Dylan and Beirut. We also watched the controversial Oscar documentary If A Tree Falls (pictured) – a film reflecting on what is classed as terrorism by the powers-that-be, the story of the Earth Liberation Front in the 90s and how one member, Daniel, found himself at the heart of one of the most destructive protests known to Generation X. An incredible film we were proud to screen with Dogwoof.

Following an incredible new music launch from Nashville’s innovative folk rock star, Levi Weaver , and Salford’s Fugitive Empire (pictured) in January, The Black Lion also became the new home to a legendary Northern Soul night in February. Make sure you don’t miss the next one on the Saturday 24th March. Levi Weaver’s new single ‘Dark Clay’ is available now from leviweaver.com Fugitive Empire’s new album is also available to download form Soundcloud.

Plus, there’s Manchester’s premier shorts night, Kino Film, which is here every month too. The next will be on March the 14th. That’s this Wednesday!

With Mark and the movie crew busy the feature film The Lost Generation, their venue The Black Lion in Salford is still bustling with alternative events. With gigs, another epic and tireless One Play, On Day with Mr Barry Evans, a film screening straight out of NYC – Bill Cunningham New York, a Q&A with Ian Tilton and a Celebrate Photography! Season in the pipeline… there’s never been a better time to get your kicks from an arts pub.
