FURTHER INFO…..

Stewy’s distinctive stencils are commonplace across the UK, and his life-size portraits of British eccentric punk poets, artists, and other British icons have sparked much interest by galleries worldwide. Now the search is on to find out who Stewy is…

Join us in discovering what the illusive street artist is all about as he presents his latest show ‘Northern Souls’ at the iconic central Manchester venue The Great Northern, Deansgate M3 4EN in collaboration with Future Artists.

The Pop up art exhibition will be running from 3rd December through to the 8th with limited prints available to purchase as well as the unveiling of brand new work, some of which will be produced live in the exhibition space!

You may have already spotted one or two of Stewy’s stenciled characters, such as Tracy Emin in Margate, John Cooper Clarke in The Black Lion Pub in Salford or Frank Sidebottom on Oldham Street in Manchester. ‘Northern Souls’ will also see the unveiling of a new piece of street art somewhere in central Manchester, this time featuring ‘Mr Manchester’ aka Tony Wilson, co-founder of influential Factory Records and founder and manager of the world renowned Hacienda nightclub… Can you guess where he might be popping up?

The Northern Souls exhibition is open to all and will be held at the Great Northern in central Manchester from 3rd December until the 8th. To RSVP to the opening night and launch party book a ticket above. Here there will also be a number of limited edition prints available for purchase, which you can view and pre-order via the online catalogue.

This event is a fantastic opportunity to get up-close to the work of one of Britain’s most influential names in modern art. It is also a rare chance for you to be amongst the first to see some of his brand new creations – some of which will be produced live in the exhibition space!

As well as celebrating the creativity of our new favourite street artist, the Northern Souls exhibition will also be hosting an auction, with a one-of-a-kind print of the Tony Wilson piece, signed by members of Factory Records alumni. All proceeds from this will go to Christie’s Trust. The proceeds from other art sales will also go towards funding free arts education workshops with Future Artists Creative Co-op in 2014.

About Stewy

The artwork is part of an expanding library of life-size, hand-cut stencils. Stewy is currently working on a series of British Icons and also a series of images representing the A to Z of Indigenous British Animals.

These images have progressed from small black and white pigeons, created in 2007, to his most recent work, a 6ft high white horse. Stewy is interested in humour, beauty and the unexpected. He places animals in an urban setting to highlight the notion of nature reclaiming the city.

Stewy is based in East London and his work can be seen in London, Brighton, Hastings, Birmingham and Manchester.
